London Olympics 2012 - Gold Medal Wining Countries And Updates - 4th August 2012

    Olympic Sprint record for Kenny

The 24-year-old was selected ahead of Chris Hoy, the 2008 Olympic champion in the event, as the number of riders in individual events is limited to one rider per nation.
Kenny, who won silver in China aged 20, clocked 9.713, improving the mark of 9.815 Hoy set en route to gold four years ago, in the ranking round.
World champion Gregory Bauge of France was second quickest in 9.952, with Australia's Shane Perkins third in 9.987 and Germany's Robert Forstemann fourth in 10.072.
The result saw Kenny claim top seeding and, with 17 riders entered, he skipped a phase of the gruelling three-day competition.
There was misfortune for Spain's Hodei Mazquiaran Uria, who required a second ride after his saddle disintegrated on the flying lap of his third attempt.
He finished in 10.604 and was set to face Perkins in the first round, with Bauge poised to ride against Zafeirios Volikakis of Greece.

    Tough time for USA duo

Fly Weight third seed Warren, competing in his third Olympic Games, lost 19-18 to Frenchman Nordine Oubaali in a nail-biting finish.
The 25-year-old said afterwards: 'I am still young. I gave my whole life to the Olympics and that was my dream. I have to work out what I am doing next.'
Spence, a Dallas-based 22-year-old, went out of the competition following a 13-11 defeat against third-seeded Indian Krishan Vikas in the Welter Weight division.
But later boxing's world governing body AIBA upheld an appeal and reinstated the USA boxer so Vikas has left the competition.
European champions Andrew Selby and Fred Evans extended Great Britain's fine start with last-16 victories in their respective Fly Weight and Welter Weight divisions.
Evans produced a fine last round to beat Egidijus Kavaliauskas 13-11 and Selby secured a 19-15 verdict over tough Kazakh Ilyas Suleimenov.
Belfast Fly Weight Michael Conlan clinched a straightforward 19-8 win over Ghana's Duke Micah.

Communities across the UK celebrate Super Saturday

The Local Leaders programme was launched around a year ago to encourage people from across the country to spread the Olympic spirit in their communities. The thousands already signed up will be organising BBQs, street parties and visits to big screens with local music, entertainment and mini-games for children.
Even if it’s from the comfort of their garden chair people across the UK are creating their own Olympic atmosphere at home. And it’s not too late to join the party. You can find recipes, posters, games ideas and the all important sporting schedule at london2012.com/supersaturday

    USA trio enjoy golden night

Phelps, competing in the final individual swim of his glittering career, bowed out in style with a stirring victory in the men's 100m Butterfly, sandwiching wins by compatriots Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky.
Franklin won the 200m Backstroke in a new world record and 15-year-old Ledecky cruised to a stunning 800m Freestyle triumph.
Phelps clinched the 17th Olympic gold medal, and 21st overall, when he came from seventh at the halfway point to win in 51.21 ahead of Chad le Clos, his conqueror in the 200m, and Evgeny Korotyshkin, who shared second.
The Baltimore swimmer, who will bow out after the 4 x 100m Medley Relay, said: 'I am just happy that last one was a win, that is all I wanted coming into tonight. I thought it would hit me harder than it is right now, a lot of those emotions haven't gone through my brain over the last week. Once I am done and once tomorrow is over, I think a lot more emotion will come out.'
Florent Manaudou won the men's 50m Freestyle in 21.34.
On the first evening of competition inside the Olympic Stadium, Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba held on to her Olympic 10,000m title.
The 27-year-old, who won the distance double at the Beijing Games, saw off Sally Kipyego and Vivian Cheruiyot with a final-lap burst to win by more than five seconds.
In the men's Shot Put final, Poland's Tomasz Majewski pulled off a stunning throw to successfully defend the title he claimed in Beijing, while Great Britain's Jessica Ennis turned a sensational start in the Heptathlon into a 184-point lead following the opening four events.
At Eton Dorney, Germany were crowned Olympic champions in the men's Quadruple Sculls with a stunning victory over silver medallists Croatia .The Germans set the pace for the length of the final and then accelerated clear of the Croatians, who had been unbeaten in 2012 up until the Olympic final. Australia's world champions finished with bronze.
Katherine Grainger's quest for Olympic glory is over after she won a sensational gold medal with Anna Watkins in the women's Double Sculls. Grainger and Watkins led from the start, beating Australia by a length, with Poland taking a distant bronze.
New Zealand's dominant crew of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray claimed gold in the men's Pair in stunning fashion. France held on to win the silver medal after fighting off GB's desperate late surge in a thrilling sprint for the line.
Mahe Drysdale claimed gold in the men's Single Sculls ahead of Czech Ondrej Synek and Northern Irishman Alan Campbell.
On the Cycling track, GB's men's Team Pursuit squad claimed a thrilling gold in a world record time.
Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Peter Kennaugh and Steven Burke clocked 3:51.659 to triumph by a supreme margin ahead of arch-rivals Australia. GB struck gold once more in the women's Keirin finals with Victoria Pendleton powering to victory.
In the Hockey, Argentina surprisingly took a point off world number ones Australia in a 2-2 draw, while the Netherlands strengthened their position at the top of Pool B with a 5-1 win over New Zealand, Spain edged out South Africa 3-2, GB beat Pakistan 4-1 and Germany thrashed eight-time champions India 5-2.
Shooter Sergei Martynov claimed gold in the men's 50m Rifle Prone, while Leuris Pupo of Cuba pulled off a shock to win gold in the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol.
Ben Ainslie came into London 2012 as overwhelming favourite to top the podium in the Finn Sailing class but heads into the final race of the regatta behind Jonas Hogh-Christensen, who has sailed the regatta of his life.
The Dane pulled four points clear of Ainslie in race nine, but the Briton responded in some style in the final race of the opening series to halve that.
In the Tennis events at Wimbledon, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams will contest the Singles gold medal match. Sharapova cruised past Russian compatriot Maria Kirilenko in straight sets, while Williams overcame world number one Victoria Azarenka for the loss of just three games.
Roger Federer ousted Juan Martin Del Potro in an epic tussle in the men's event, eventually winning through 19-17 in the deciding set and will meet Andy Murray, who beat Novak Djokovic 7-5 7-5.
China's Dong Dong claimed gold in the men's Individual Trampoline event with a breathtaking sky-high routine and, at Lord's, Republic of Korea's Oh Jin-hyek claimed the men's Individual Archery title.
China's Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei produced a stunning performance to claim gold in the Badminton Mixed Doubles. The top seeds were far too strong for their compatriots and second seeds Xu Chen and Ma Jin as they powered to a 21-11 21-17 victory at Wembley Arena.
France's Judo heavyweight (+100kg) Teddy Riner delivered gold with victory over Russian Alexander Mikhaylin at ExCeL. Disappointing day for Madden and Ahlmann

The top 60 riders from a field of 75 in today's one-round class progress to tomorrow's second phase, when the race for Team medals also begins.
Madden, Olympic individual bronze medallist four years ago, was eliminated aboard Via Volo, while 2011 World Cup winner Ahlmann clocked up 15 faults on Codex One.
And Switzerland's former world number one Pius Schwizer only just made it, filling the final 60th qualifying place.
'I am hugely disappointed - I can't explain what happened,' Ahlmann said.
Great Britain's riders made a solid start, but it was a disappointing day for Peter Charles.
Former European champion Charles exited the Individual competition on Vindicat. However, his team-mates Ben Maher, Scott Brash and Nick Skelton all enjoyed a trouble-free opening day.
Charles and Vindicat got it all wrong at an early double, knocking down both elements and then collecting two time penalties.
'It was a disastrous start to the round,' Charles said. 'He was a bit tense, he didn't want to take the bridle, so I ended up taking eight strides before fence three when I had planned to go on seven strides.
'I have got to use all my experience to work around it now.'
Team medals will be decided after round two of the competition on Monday, with the Individual medal race reaching its conclusion next Wednesday.

Chen Race Walks home to gold

Chen, 19, led from the 14km stage and pulled away from the pack to finish the race in an Olympic record 1:18.46.
He was followed home by Guatemala's Erick Barrondo for silver and Wang Zhen, who had earlier led the field but took bronze.
Russia's Valeriy Borchin, the defending champion, had moved up to second by the 16km stage but collapsed with the finish in sight.
Chen picked up the pace to pull clear of the field and began high-fiving the crowd as he approached The Mall.
A late burst took Barrondo well ahead in second, with Wang 39 seconds behind the winner.

Murray and Robson going for gold

Murray was already assured of at least a silver medal in Singles ahead of tomorrow's final against Roger Federer of Switzerland.
Now he will also have a Doubles medal after he and Robson pulled off victory for Great Britain in a match tie-break, going through 6-1 6-7 (9/7) 10-7.
The British pair began the day by defeating Australian duo Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Stosur 6-3 3-6 10-8 on Centre Court.
That meant they were guaranteed a shot at a medal tomorrow, but they wanted at least silver and came out firing on Court One.
Lisicki and Kas have both reached Wimbledon semi-finals, the former in singles and the latter in men's doubles, but they lost the first six points and were quickly 3-0 down.
Murray had to save two break points in the fifth game but that was a minor blip as the British pair promptly broke the Kas serve for the second time in the match and Robson served out the set.
The teenager was more than holding her own in high-quality company and played a big part as the pair broke the Kas serve once more to lead 2-1 in the second set.
Robson conceded her serve for the second time straight away but a third consecutive break followed and this time Murray held to put the home duo two games away from the final.
Robson was just starting to wobble a little, and an untimely double fault allowed the Germans to break back for 4-4, but the teenager saved a set point in her next service game to take the set into a tie-break.
It swung one way and then the other, with Kas and Lisicki turning a 3-0 deficit into a 6-3 lead only to see three more set points go begging.
Robson and Murray saved a fourth, too, but a fifth followed when the Scot missed a volley, slamming his racquet to the turf in frustration, and this time the Germans capitalised.
That meant yet another match tie-break for the British pair, their third in successive matches, and they made a decent start, but Kas and Lisicki were matching them point for point.
The crucial point came with Lisicki serving at 7-6 behind, a volley into the net giving the British duo a mini-break, and Robson won both her service points to earn themn victory.

    Bryan brothers net gold glory

The 34-year-old siblings beat French pair Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4 7-6 (7/2) in the final at Wimbledon.
The 11-time grand slam winners said playing for their country brought a higher level of intensity to their game.
Bob Bryan said: 'I can tell you there's no better feeling than this, winning for each other, for our team and for our country. It brought a different level of intensity to our tennis.
'To hear the national anthem and stand on the podium, we could shut our careers down today and be happy for the rest of our lives.'
To hear the national anthem and stand on the podium, we could shut our careers down today and be happy for the rest of our lives.
    Bob Bryan
His brother said the win was a good end to what had been a 'rough year', as it means they now have the career Golden Slam of all four majors and an Olympic title.
Mike Bryan said: 'We saved it all for this one. We lost two grand slam finals this year, it's kind of been a little bit of a rough 12 months but we've got smiles on our faces now.
'There hasn't been a more special feeling than this. It's just something that you dream about. It's pretty cool to say you have the Golden Slam."
The USA players celebrated their victory with Mike leaping into his brother's arms.
Mike Bryan said: 'Those moments, you don't plan them out. I just usually jump and he holds me up. That's the longest we've ever hugged.'
Tsonga was upbeat after missing out on gold, but silver gave him plenty of satisfaction.
He said: 'Of course we are disappointed about this final, but anyway it's something really good to get this medal. It's really something big and we will never forget this moment.'
Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet, also from France, beat Spain's David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 to take bronze.

Republic of Korea dominate at Lord's

Despite a couple of mis-steps along the way, they eventually achieved both.

Heading into the Games, the Republic of Korea team topped the all-time medal table with 30 appearances on the podium since the standardised competition returned to the schedule in 1972.

While there was an obvious mandate to expand on that haul, one medal beyond all others was required this time - the men's Individual gold.

Two silvers and two bronzes were the best they had previously managed, despite winning the men's Team event at Beijing 2008, Athens 2004, Sydney 2000 and Seoul 1988.

The final standings this time show that the Koreans left with a total of three golds and a bronze from the four events, including the elusive men's title for Oh Jin-hyek.

Taking place at the historic cricket venue of Lord's, Archery was one of the first Olympic Games sports to get under way as the 72-arrow ranking round took place on 27 July, the morning of the Opening Ceremony.

Oh's compatriot Im Dong-hyun, the world number two, duly delivered the first world record of the Games.

He beat his own previous mark by three points to post 699 from a possible 720, with team-mates Kim Bubmin and Oh placing second and third in the seedings.

The men's Team event was next up on 28 July, with Im, Kim and Oh clear favourites.

But they had to settle for bronze as Italy took a surprise gold.

The trio of Michele Frangilli, Marco Galiazzo and Mauro Nespoli were placed sixth after the ranking shoot but came past Chinese Taipei and China before beating the well-fancied USA in the final.

After an evenly-matched 24-arrow contest, Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games champion Frangilli was left needing a 10 for victory with the last shot of the match. He duly picked out the centre gold.

Republic of Korea, beaten in their last-four meeting with the USA, took the consolation win over Mexico in the bronze medal match.

The women's teams were up next and this time Republic of Korea did take gold, continuing a remarkable record of seven consecutive Olympic Games titles.

Just as they were at Beijing 2008, China were the beaten finalists as Lee Sung-jin, Ki Bo Bae and Choi Hyeonju defeated Chinese trio Cheng Ming, Fang Yuting and Xu Jing 210-209 on the last arrow.

Conditions were wet and windy, though not as bad as those which prevailed four years ago, and Ki held her nerve to take victory with a closing nine.

Japanese trio Ren Hayakawa, Miki Kanie and Kaori Kawanaka claimed their country's first-ever women's Archery medal, defeating Russia by two points in the bronze match.

The Individual competitions threw up a series of surprise results.

In the women's draw, world number one Deepika Kumari and reigning world champion Denisse van Lamoen were both sent out in the first round, but it was no shock to see Ki take her second gold.

Her final against Mexico's Aida Roman went to a one-arrow shoot-off, with Ki winning despite drawing first and finding the eight ring.

Mexico had never won an Archery medal before arriving in London but left with two as Roman's silver was complimented by bronze for team-mate Mariana Avitia, who beat five-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig of the USA into third place.

There were echoes of Kumari's exit in the men's round, with men's number one Brady Ellison falling at the hands of Australia's Taylor Worth, and disbelief when Im lost 7-1 to European champion Rick van der Ven.

When Kim was knocked out 6-5 by eventual bronze medallist Dai Xiaoxiang, Korea feared the men's title had once again eluded them. But third-seed Oh kept his composure to reach the final, where he beat Japan's Takaharu Furukawa 7-1 to succeed where so many of his predecessors had faltered.
