Ethiopia's Meseret Defar tonight produced an impressive display to claim gold in the 5000m final.

Defar denied her compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba the chance to add another title to the 10,000m crown she won a week ago, having taken gold in both events in Beijing.
Instead Defar, who won 5,000m gold eight years ago in Athens, held off her challengers down the home straight to win in 15:04.25.
Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot was second, with Dibaba getting the bronze.

    Burroughs triumphs for USA gold

Jordan Burroughs walked away with gold after becoming the USA's first Olympic Games Wrestling champion of London 2012.

Jordan Burroughs of the United States (blue) competes with Sadegh Saeed Goudarzi of Iran in the men's Freestyle 74kg Wrestling on Day 14.

The USA has a long history of successful Olympic Wrestling campaigns, but they had not won gold in London until Burroughs defeated Iran's Sadegh Goudarzi 1-0 1-0 in the 74kg Freestyle class tonight.
Burroughs, the poster-boy of Wrestling in the USA, made his determination to win in London clear when he chose the Twitter handle @alliseeisgold, and he did not let the opportunity to top the podium slip by.
The 24-year-old started competing in international tournaments less than two years ago, but he showed no nerves tonight, clinching the first period after taking the Iranian down.
The second period looked set for a stalemate until Burroughs picked up Goudarzi and dumped him off the mat with barely 10 seconds left.
Uzbekistan's Soslan Tigiev and Russian Denis Tsargush claimed bronze medals.

    Russia take fourth Wrestling gold

Russia claimed their fourth Wrestling gold of London 2012 after Dzhamal Otarsultanov beat Vladimer Khinchegashvili in the 55kg Freestyle final this evening.

Dzhamal Otarsultanov of Russia celebrates winning the gold medal in the Men's Freestyle 55 kg Wrestling on Day 14.

Otarsultanov, 25, had never wrestled in a senior World Championships before he came to London, but he performed well at the ExCeL tonight, edging past his 21-year-old Georgian opponent 1-0 4-3.
Otarsultanov won a leg grapple in the first period and looked set to cruise to victory after moving ahead in the second.
The Georgian then dramatically threw his opponent in the last few seconds of the fight, but the referee ruled the move did not deserve a point and Otarsultanov claimed victory.
Russia top the wrestling medal table at London 2012 after Roman Vlasov, Alan Khugaev and Natalia Vorobieva won gold earlier this week. They have also claimed three bronze medals and one silver.
Shinichi Yumoto of Japan and DPR Korea's Yang Kyong Il claimed the two bronze medals on offer in the weight category.

    Ekberg stars for Sweden

Sweden will have the chance to earn their first Olympic gold medal in the men's Handball competition after booking a place in Sunday's final with a narrow 27-26 win over Hungary at the Basketball Arena.
Mattias Andersson #1 of Sweden celebrates his teams victory over Hungary
Goalkeeper Mattias Andersson #1 of Sweden celebrates his teams victory over Hungary during the Men's Handball semifinal game between Hungary and Sweden on Day 14.

The Scandinavians were three-time consecutive silver medallists at the Games, finishing second at Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney, but now they aim to go one better when they face either France or Croatia in two days' time.
The victory was underpinned by fast breaks in attack and a solid defence, with Niklas Ekberg taking himself to the top of the scoring chart for the tournament with six goals.
It was a valiant effort from Hungary, who will at least equal their best-ever Olympic finish of fourth, but they could take bronze for the first time in their clash with the loser of tonight's second semi-final.
Both sides came into the match on the back of superb results in the quarter-finals, with Hungary emerging triumphant over pre-tournament favourites Iceland after two periods of extra time, while Sweden saw off European champions Denmark.
It was an even start as both sides traded goals throughout the opening 17 minutes for the score to be tied at 7-7, with Hungary goalkeeper Roland Mikler enjoying himself, saving five of the first nine shots thrown at him.
But Sweden soon found their accuracy in front of goal and a strong final 13 minutes saw them throw in two separate three-goal salvos, which was enough to give them a 15-12 lead at the break.
Ekberg was again the main player for the Scandinavians as he threw in four first-half goals to take his tally to 42 for the tournament, and he continued his hot streak in the opening exchanges of the second period, with two more as the advantage was extended to 21-17.
If Hungary were feeling the effects of a gruelling 80 minutes of action against Iceland just 48 hours earlier, they were not showing it as they threw in three successive goals to bring their deficit back down to one.
Sweden held firm and did enough to restore that cushion to three goals going into the final 10 minutes, but Hungary kept going, backed by a sizeable and vocal following, and brought the score back to 25-26 with 90 seconds to go as a grandstand finish was on the cards.
Kim Ekdahl du Rietz effectively won the game for Sweden when he threw in with 22 seconds remaining to give them a two-goal lead, which did not leave enough time for Hungary to turn it around, though they did add one more.
